Bessel Van der Kolk
I provide a relaxed, non-judgemental, and empathic atmosphere where we work together in collaboration to achieve your therapy goals. Previous clients have described me as direct, understanding, patient and easy to talk to.
All of us struggle with our mental wellbeing at some point in our lives and so I believe that therapy should be seen as an act of self-care, just like looking after our physical health.
However, addressing our problems on our own can be overwhelming and it may be difficult to know where to start. We will work together to identify the cause of your problems and break them down into more manageable chunks. You will gain an understanding of your difficulties and what keeps them going, and learn strategies to help you overcome these problems and improve your quality of life.
I provide a safe, supportive environment for you to make changes to ways of thinking and ways of acting, and build resilience for future challenges. Get in touch if you are ready to move forwards and work towards a healthier, happier you.
At the start of my career I worked as a nursing assistant in mental health acute hospital settings and this inspired me to undertake training in Mental Health Nursing in 2010. I worked as a mental health nurse in forensic, hospital and community settings within the NHS. I believe this experience provided me with an excellent foundation for the delivery of effective CBT therapy.
I began my therapeutic professional studies with Post Graduate study in Psychological Interventions in 2013. This gave me valuable skills and a great depth of knowledge of CBT and other therapies before focusing my attention on training specifically as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. I’m a BABCP accredited CBT therapist which means my practice receives regular supervision.
I later trained in EMDR, a technique most commonly used in the treatment of trauma but with growing research of its effectiveness when applied to other difficulties.
My experience combines medical knowledge with academic qualifications. I am fascinated by the impact of our physical health upon mental health, particularly yoga and movement. This has led me to complete yoga teacher training in India with a specific focus on using yoga combined with talking therapies.
